science and health

Item:
A book titled Science and Health. It’s subtitled WITH KEY TO THE SCRIPTURES, which is not a very good sentence, frankly.
Why It’s Here:
Someone got sick of science and/or health and/or scriptures. I’ll keep an eye out for faithless, credulous wastrels wandering the building. It’s worth noting that the book claims “Over 10 Million Copies Sold”—how many million have ended up in swapmeets over the years?
Probable Recipient:
A bemused atheist. Or a bemused theist. Or a collector of extremely non-rare books, who wants something to sit next to their recently-filched copy of the Da Vinci Code.
Best thing about the cover:
The brilliant use of negative space in the bottom left.

Silly boy, Mary Baker Eddy was the founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist (today that is surely an oxymoron if ever there was one). I’ve heard that modern-day evangelicals really hate the Christian Scientists, primarily because of their unusually well-balanced and honest newspaper, the Christian Science Monitor. Strange, especially since Ms. Eddy was a big proponent of faith healing. I suppose they’re ok with evolution or somesuch, making them the minions of Satan.

It all comes together! Comparitive theology was one of my favorite things to have never studied at all, so you can understand why I’m so thoroughly unfamiliar with Ms. Eddy.
Actually, I live a block from a CS church. They have a weekly sermon-subject placard—most of the subjects are pithy one- or two-word phrases, but they’ve got a few wordy ones that come around in the twice-yearly schedule.
My favorite: “Is the Universe, Including Man, Evolved by Atomic Force?” I wrote a song with that title. That’s also the sole lyrical content of the song. I should really record that song some time.
